The Old Wagon Road connects McCarthy and Kennecott. The hike one way is 4.5 miles and is a pleasant walk with a slight uphill grade. Start by following the main road north from the McCarthy Museum toward Kennecot Mill Town and take the runoff about 1000 feet down the road on your left (just past the red and white community center). A side trail, about 1 mile from McCarthy, leads to the terminal moraine at the toe of the Kennicott Glacier and extraordinary views up the Kennicott Valley. You can also primitive camp in the open area at the terminal moraine. At the far end of the Old Wagon Road is the Kennecott Visitor Center. The Old Wagon Road also provides access to the Root Glacier, Bonanza Mine, and Jumbo Mine trails. During the summer, check with the park service about regular shuttles times if you would like to walk one way and take a shuttle back. You can also mountain bike the Old Wagon Road, but beware it is rocky and can be muddy.
