Tolsona Mud Volcanoes Details

The Tolsona mud volcanoes are a geologic feature created when bubbling methane gas from coal beds reaches the earth's surface. The methane carries silt, which is deposited when the bubbles reach the air and burst. It is incredible how many bubbles created this landscape. This trail is privately maintained and not managed by the National Park Service. It begins at the Tolsona Wilderness Campground, 14 miles west of the town of Glennallen. If you are not camping at the campground, a parking fee of $5 is required. In the campground, go to campsite F and start hiking the trail directly across from it. As you wind up the hill, take note of the route marked by shiny CDs nailed to the trees. This is important when you reach a bog and the trail is harder to follow. Be cautious around the pits as they may be several feet deep. The hike is 2 miles roundtrip.
