The Scorpion Ranch House is home to the only Visitor Center on Santa Cruz Island and provides an orientation to all activities on the island. You will interactive exhibits and restrooms available here as well. The Ranch was home to the Caire family, descendants of Justinian Caire, a San Francisco mining equipment entrepreneur in the late 19th century. By the end of the century, Caire owned the majority of the Santa Cruz Island Company and operated both a vineyard and ranch on the island until his death. His family continued the operation until family litigation resulted in the split the island and forced most of the family to sell their portions of the land. Sheep ranching continued on the island by descendants of Caire's daughter until 1984, with Scorpion Ranch still in use.
