Cabrillo Monument Details
In 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his shipmates claimed San Miguel Island for the Spanish crown. When Cabrillo stepped ashore on the Point Loma Peninsula near modern-day San Diego, Calif., he was the first European to land on the west coast of the future United States. The Cabrillo Monument, which is accessible via the Nidever Canyon Trail (and without a guide), is a memorial overlooking the harbor commemorating the European explorer.
