Q: What is primeval old-growth forest? A: A primeval old-growth forest is defined as one that has attained great age without significant disturbance. The forest found within Congaree National Park is one of the last old-growth forests in the country. Q: How many acres does the park encompass? A: Congaree National Park encompasses nearly 27,000 acres of designated wilderness. Q: What types of wildlife can I see in the park? A: Keep your eyes peeled and you may spot river otter, turtles, wading birds, deer and maybe even an alligator during your visit, not to mention any number of the nearly 200 bird species that live and migrate through the park during the year. Q: What can I do if I have 2 hours to spend in the park? A: Walk the 2.4 mile Boardwalk Trail is, with a free, self-guiding brochure provided at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. There are wooden numbers on the boardwalk rails which coincide with numbers in the brochure, and explain to you some of the history and natural ecology of the park. Q: Is fishing allowed in the park? A: Yes, fishing is allowed. You must possess a valid South Carolina fishing license. Q: What is the difference between a floodplain and a swamp? A: A floodplain is a low lying area near a river, covered by water periodically throughout the year. A swamp is permanently covered with water. Q: Where is the best place to see big trees? A: Big trees can be found along the Boardwalk Loop and throughout the trail system at Congaree National Park. Q: How tall are the trees? A: The average canopy height is over 100ft tall. Congaree has one of the tallest temperate deciduous forests in the world. The National Champion Loblolly Pine (found at Congaree) is 167 feet tall and almost 15 feet in circumference. Q: Can you use bikes on the trail(s)? A: There are no designated bike trails at Congaree National Park. Q: Are dogs allowed on the trail(s)? A: Dogs are allowed on all trails at Congaree National Park. They may not be left unattended and are required to be kept on a leash at all times. Q: Does the park rent canoes or kayaks? A: No. Canoes and kayaks can be rented through outfitters in nearby Columbia.
