Caves

Pinnacles is home to Bear Gulch Cave and Balconies Cave. Both are talus caves, which - unlike traditional caves - are formed by fallen boulders. Flashlights or headlamps are required. Bear Gulch is home to a sensitive colony of Townsend's big-eared bats. The lower half of Bear Gulch Cave is typically open to the public from mid-July to mid-May. The entire cave is closed from mid-May to mid-July. The cave connects with the Moses Spring Trail, a loop that's appropriate for families with children. Balconies Cave features dark, winding passages. Be prepared to climb down large rocks and scramble through openings in the boulders. Balconies Cave is typically open year-round. To explore the cave, set out from Old Pinnacles Trailhead, Chaparral or Pinnacles Campground. Each trail offers unique views and sights.
