Ranger Led Programs

Lassen offers quite a variety of Ranger Programs in both the summer and the winter. The most popular include Ranger Led-Snowshoe Walks, which are available from the beginning of January to the beginning of April. These walks are a great way to sharpen snowshoeing skills while learning about the winter ecology of the park. Ranger Led Snowshoe Walks start at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Route and distance generally depends on the fitness of the group. Snowshoes are provided by the rangers at the request of a $1 donation, which helps to cover the upkeep of the snowshoes. Groups are limited to 40 people, and the walks are open to kids ages 8 and older. There's also a Winter Ecology Snowshoe Program for kids in 3rd to 8th grade. Programs are by reservation only: 530-595-6132. Every summer, there is a public bird banding event, which is usually offered in the mornings from 8-9:30 a.m. at the Manzanita Boat Ramp. Bird banding is a great way for rangers to monitor the population and health of the birds of Lassen, with a specific nod to eagles and falcons.
