Wind Cave National Park has over 30 miles of hiking trails that lead through a variety of mixed-grass prairie and pine forest. Trail difficulty ranges from easy to strenuous. You are also allowed to hike off-trail. Black Hills National Forest offers an addition 450 miles of hiking trails, from short, easy hikes to long, strenuous ones. You can hike through forests and view rock spires, waterfalls, and lakes. Coming across a large wild animal or two is not uncommon. For those seeking a little peace and quiet along with some adventure, the Black Elk Wilderness offers 13,426 acres of completely non-motorized land, including 18 designated hiking trails. The George S. Mickelson Trail spans over 100 miles between the National Forest's southern to northern borders.
