Johnstown Flood National Memorial, Pennsylvania

More than 2,200 people died on May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam burst during heavy rains, sending a torrent of water 40 feet high surging downstream and hitting the town of Johnstown, Pa., a little less than an hour later.
