During the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, passengers on United Airlines Flight 93 successfully thwarted Al Qaida hijackers' plan to crash the aircraft into the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., by mounting an ad-hoc assault on the plane's cockpit.
